Our tiltForward Fellowship reimagines how we grow the next generation of education leaders.

In this 10-month learning experience, a cohort of people managers will learn how to create more diverse and inclusive schools and educational organizations.

The tiltForward Fellowship is our answer to making the future inclusive.

Our fellowship builds tomorrow’s leaders so that we transform our snow-capped sector with true representation and, in doing so, enable every student to see themselves in every part of their educational journey.

We seek to directly serve new people managers, a commonly overlooked group when it comes to management training.

New people managers are the perfect cohort for training — hungry to learn with their ears to the ground and their eyes on the big picture. People managers at any level of experience carry tremendous positional power and weight in a school or nonprofit. Managers can create opportunity or they can take it away.

We need to accelerate inclusive manager training to close the demographic gap in talent within our generation.

Our program focuses on new managers to get their practice strong from the jump.



The tiltForward Fellowship is an innovative, one-of-a-kind leadership development program that offers:

  • 15 days of full programming across 10 months, featuring a 3-day intensive winter journey to learn outside of Washington, DC

  • Learning experiences rooted in concrete management skill development, racial identity and inclusion, and design thinking

  • Access to a cohort of peers working in other schools and education organizations across Washington, DC

  • Opportunity to learn in differentiated race-based learning circles

  • Executive coaching

As a fellow, you will:

  • Build a diverse community with other education leaders

  • Grow your skills as a people manager

  • Design an equity project you can implement in your school or organization to better attract, grow, retain, and promote talent of color

  • Expand your individual leadership and impact

The ideal tiltForward Fellow is someone who:

  • Works in a school, education nonprofit, or other education organization in Washington, DC

  • Currently has a people management role* and plans to be in this role at their school or organization for the duration of the fellowship program

  • Brings 1 to 5 years of people management experience

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to honing leadership that advances intersectional racial equity culture across their work

    *We define people management as leading individuals and/or teams. People managers oversee, coach, and develop other team members. In schools, people managers often are in leadership, administration, and coaching roles. In nonprofits, people managers tend to have direct reports and/or lead teams of varying sizes. We recognize that organizations structure management in different ways. We also recognize that some project managers are in roles that require them to manage people across teams and in a variety of directions (e.g., laterally, vertically, diagonally, etc.). We encourage prospective fellows in a variety of roles to apply, though we place a heavy emphasis on cultivating a cohort of fellows who are in roles that directly impact other team members in their everyday work.



Our tiltForward Fellowship application goes live on March 1, 2019. The selection process includes two components: an electronic application due in April, and an interview for finalists in May. We will notify fellows in June and kick off our programming on July 31, 2019 in Washington, DC. We see our selection process as an opportunity to learn and dig into your story and personal journey; we hope that you feel affirmed, connected, and challenged through our process.


Our tiltForward Fellowship consists of 15 full days of programming across 10 months. As a cohort, fellows will meet across two intensive journeys and monthly tiltForward Thursday convenings. Below are programming dates for our inaugural 2019 DC tiltForward Fellows:

  • Winter Journey: December 10 - 12, 2019

  • January 16, 2020

  • February 27, 2020

  • March 12, 2020

  • April 9, 2020

  • Graduation: May 20, 2020


Program tuition* covers a small portion of the total cost to run the tiltForward Fellowship and ensures commitment from all fellows and their employers. Tuition contributes to the full fellowship experience, covering all costs related to program, coaching, food, and associated travel during the winter journey. All selected fellows will receive a partial scholarship to defer costs remaining outside of program tuition; this partial scholarship is based on the organization’s size and/or nonprofit status. Access is important to us, so our program tuition model considers a range of schools and organizations that fellows may work at:

  • All for-profit companies, foundations with assets over $10 million, and schools or nonprofits with budgets over $10 million: $10,875/fellow

  • Foundations with assets less than $10 million, and schools or nonprofits with budgets between $4 million and $9,999,999: $7,750/fellow

  • Schools or nonprofits with budgets between $1 million and $3,999,999 and government: $4,750/fellow

  • Schools or nonprofits with budgets under $999,999: $1,875/fellow

We encourage prospective Fellows to work with their employers to sponsor tuition as a part of their continued professional learning and development. Some need-based financial will be available, though we ask that all participants and/or their employers make a minimal contribution.

*Note that all program tuition rates for 2019 DC tiltForward Fellows reflect our pilot year pricing model.
